In 2010, technological advances mean an explosion in the mediums for delivering and interacting with Art. Through MINE, I endeavor to explore a narrative style called Transmedia Storytelling. Typically this genre has been used by marketers for film, tv and computer game narratives. I feel it can be used to great effect and better purpose to shape an audience's experience in live theatre.
"Transmedia storytelling represents a process where integral elements of a fiction get dispersed systematically across multiple delivery channels for the purpose of creating a unified and coordinated entertainment experience. Ideally, each medium makes it own unique contribution to the unfolding of the story". h. jenkins 1
MINE is based on the events following a tragic explosion at the Sago Mine in West Virginia, on January 2, 2006. This accident was greatly exacerbated after a miscommunication between rescuers, government officials and community members was broadcast globally stating the miners were alive. The circus like atmosphere of international TV news icons celebrating with relieved family members was twisted sickeningly when almost 3 hours later mining officials announced the truth.
I was working as the News Director for a local radio station and reported from the Sago Mine site for three days. During this time and in the months following, I was devastated by the way mining officials, members of government and news media outlets manipulated a small community in crisis.
